Who is that great looking guy at the top of this post? Is it Edward? No. That handsome young man is me. Well my sister did the best she could but I could only get so close to Edward Cullen’s hotness. It was pretty embarrasing considering nobody else in the theater dressed up as anybody. My sister and I got there around 10 and walked right in and got great seats. I was shocked. After a couple hours of playing six degrees of separation the previews started at 12:04. I love playing six degrees of separation. I connected Jenna Fisher with Dakota Fanning. It was epic. Anyway I should probably talk about the movie.
Why pictures of shirtless men? Because they’re werewolves and werewolves are awesome. Rotten Tomatoes gave this a 27% and says that fans will enjoy it but others will be turned off by its slow pace, downcast tone, and excessive length. Well…yeah that’s absolutely right. I don’t blame the critics for coming to that consensus. However, I’m not sure the blame lies with those who worked on the movie. They should really blame Stephanie Meyer for writing a boring book *SPOLIER ALERT* that ends where it started *END*. The movie did the best they could with a weak book. I thought the movie did the right thing by adding fight scenes that Meyer avoided. Other than that the movie stayed true to the book with minor changes. One of the changes was the epilogue which isn’t that big of deal. Well it did upset me because after the movie I really liked Jacob but when I finished the book I hated him. Some of the music was good. Some of the music sucked. That doesn’t say much but there was nothing spectular and doesn’t come close to the songs on the Twilight soundtrack. You really can’t beat Supermassive Blackhole, Decode, and Spotlight. The acting wasn’t bad. The parts that seemed weird I’d blame on the writing. I’ll start with Taylor Lautner who plays Jacob Black in case you didn’t know. I thought Lautner was excellent. Lautner and Kristen Stewart blended perfectly with each other like they did in the book. He’s also obviously jacked, which he should be. They did not attempt to make him taller like he was in the book. That was probably best because it would’ve looked stupid. Anyway he basically did what he had to do, which was gel with Stewart and look buff. If Jacob were real he would be Lautner. As for Robert Pattinson, he did the job as Edward. Viewers have to remember that he’s a vampire. He’s from a different time period so he’s old and awkward.
Why a picture of Kristen Stewart? Well she does portray the main character. Kristen Stewart put up another strong performance in this film. She seems to bring part of herself into Bella Swan and it works. Some people may criticize her but Bella is an awkward person who’s an outsider. Her lines do seem monotone and the delivery seems slow and hesitant but that’s Bella. Bella’s not this lively girl. She’s laid back. Stewart captured Bella’s depression perfectly. Her screams during nightmares and zombie like appearance were believable. Of course I have to say that this girl is beautiful. They took the makeup off her and she still looked great. You can understand why everyone seems to be attracted to Bella. She also captures the body language of Bella. Like Lautner I think that Stewart makes a great Bella Swan.
The Volturi were great and just what I pictured. Dakota Fanning is creepy and the guy who played Frost in Frost/Nixon did a great job as Aro.
Some interactions between Bella and Edward didn’t seem to work but sometimes you wonder why they are saying what they are saying. At times you just say to yourself who says that? The special effects were much better.
Basically I think the performances were there but the writing and source material makes their performances look dull at times. I just have to blame the source material. Ssjrem couldn’t even finish it and I don’t blame him. It’s just not a good story. I definitely enjoyed watching the movie more than reading the book but I’m a movie guy. I agree with Rotten Tomatoes. Hardcore fans will enjoy it but others will wonder why so many care.
