New Moon DOES get Blind-Sided

by ssjrem

The weekend right after Thanksgiving is usually pretty weak. Due to the holiday, the weekend grosses tend to get a little inflanted, so the drops the weekend after can be pretty severe. Usually, the weekend is ruled by holdovers as opposed to any newcomers and it’s the same story this weekend. The same two movies have occupied the top two spots for three weekends now, but the positions have been reversed this weekend.

The Blind Side

After playing second fiddle for two weekends in a row, The Blind Side manages to take the number one spot away from New Moon. It’s hard to believe that over 100 million dollars separated them two weeks ago. The Blind Side has shown great legs while New Moon hasn’t shown any…. at all. Anyway, even TBS isn’t completely immune to the post Thanksgiving drop as it slips 49% to 20.4 million. Still, it’s the best hold in the entire top ten. With an amazing gross so far of 129 million, it’s way ahead of the pace of The Proposal. And with the holiday legs still to come, I think The Blind Side is pretty much a lock for 200 million. Sure as hell never saw that coming. Hell, it could climb as high as 225, maybe even more. I really wouldn’t be surprised if Avatar doesn’t reach those kinds of numbers. A lot of potential for Avatar, man, but I’m still skeptical. Anyway, on to number two.

New Moon

Well, New Moon drops hard again. Another huge fall, this time 63% brings it all the way down to 15.7 million. How you go from 142 to 16 in two weeks is beyond me. New Moon had a 108 million dollar lead on The Blind Side two weeks ago and is now behind it by almost five million. But that’s what happens with films like this, I guess. All the fangirls rush out and then the hype subsides. I knew the opening would be huge and the legs would be terrible, but I wasn’t expecting it to be this bad. But Summit and everyone else involved have little to worry about, though. The total is up to an incredible 256 million. New Moon’s currently the sixth highest grossing movie of the year and will surpass Star Trek in a day or two. That’s sad. The gap in quality between Star Trek and New Moon is absurd. New Moon, if it continues to fade like this, won’t even be around to benefit from Christmas boosts. So, I honestly don’t see 300 million happening. No movie that’s opened north of 110 million has failed to hit 300 million. New Moon might gain the dubious distinction of being the first. If it’s lucky, it might just be able to squeak by that milestone. We’ll see.

Brothers fares the best of the newcomers, opening to a decent 9.7 million. I didn’t know there were people that could actually take this seriously. I laugh every time I see the trailer or a commercial. It’s outright ridiculous. Anyway, yeah, pretty decent. Nothing special though. Plus, it’s only got a 57% at RT. It does have a respectable 7.8 at IMDB, though, but those ratings are often ridiculous, especially during opening weekends.

You’d think that maybe since we’re actually in the Christmas season now, this is when a Christmas movie might be released. Nope, A Christmas Carol has already been in theatres for a fucking month. It does not make sense to release them that early. You release a Christmas movie in early November and it can be a complete nonfactor by the time Christmas actually rolls around, when it should be making the most money. Anyway, ACC pulled in 7.5 million, down 52%. Total’s up to 115. Should it find its footing again, it might be able to propel itself to the neighborhood of 180 or so.

Thank you, America! Thank you for allowing a bad movie to actually fail for once! Old Dogs doesn’t rebound at all after its terrible opening as it falls 59% down to 6.9 million. It’s got a weak total of 34 million.

2012 drops 63% to 6.6 million. Total’s up to 149. Really, pretty damn weak. However, 2012 is making  a fucking killing overseas. It’s foreign gross accounts for 75% of its total gross, which is unsually high. Domestically, it’s the 14th highest grossing movie of the year. Worldwide, it’s fourth. I guess people in foreign countries can be even more retarded than Americans sometimes.

Well, Armored got fucked. A weak 6.6 million opening weekend. This will fade into obscurity soon.

Oh, man, and here I was kind of hoping Ninja Assassin would somehow magically find legs. Not to be. 62% drop to 5 million. About 30 million total now. Eh, not half bad.

Planet 51: 58% drop to 4.3 million. 34 million total. Don’t care.

And finally, we have Everybody’s Fine, which despite being the only Christmas-themed opener this weekend and boasting some respectable star power, get fucked. It earned a terrible 4 million. Ouch.

So, that’s the top ten, but I just want to point out something funny about the other two openers this weekend. Up in the Air, George Clooney’s third movie in the past two months grossed over four times what Transylmania did, despite the fact that Transylmania was in 67 times as many theatres. I really am glad that movie has been so badly ignored. Among wide opening movies, it’s the third worst of all time. Good riddance. So, yeah, next weekend brings us only one new wide release, but another film expands into wide release after an extremely impressive run in limited release.

Invictus: I’m all for this movie. Matt Damon and Morgan Freeman plus Clint Eastwood? How can you go wrong? Well, then again, Million Dollar Baby was a terrible movie…. But I have faith in this one to be good. I’m sure my friends and I will see it, so expect a review from me or dukemich, especially because finals will be over and we’ll have all the time in the world.

The Princess and the Frog: Lots of people online have been touting this as the triumphant return of traditional animation as opposed to computer animation, but I’m skeptical. Aside from The Simpsons Movie (which was one the worst movies of all time; I’m ashamed I spent money on it), nothing traditionally animated has really done all that well. But maybe this can buck the trend. It’s been kicking ass in limited release. And, actually, I didn’t realize this until now, but The Princess and the Frog actually managed to beat Transylmania too, even though TPATF is in but two theatres. Yeah, two. Transylmania is in over 500 times as many theatres. Just goes to show how much it sucks. Damn, that’s embarrassing. Oh well. Anyway I’m getting pretty pumped for Avatar and I’m slowly but surely becoming more optimistic about what it could do. I’d really like it to take away the holiday crown from New Moon. Or it could flop horribly and not even hit 100 million. There’s no telling. Until we meet again.

  1. I don’t think Avatar’s going to do much. I just watched Star Trek today. It’s so much better than New Moon. “You wanna shoot me!!!!!”

    • You’re just mad cuz mommy would rather sleep with uncle Tommy than you!

      • I just realized something. Five of my last seven blogs have begun with “New Moon,” including three in a row now. I gotta get something else to write about.
