Best of Coldplay

After talking about one of the worst artists ever, I figured it would be great to talk about one of the best bands out there today and one of my favorite bands. Let me start by saying you’re not gay if you listen to Coldplay. Good music does not equal gay. Anyway, Coldplay’s first album was Parachutes. The only song the casual fan knows off that album is “Yellow,” which was probably its breakout hit. There are other good songs on the album, including “Sparks” which was in Wedding Crashers, but its second album, Rush of Blood to the Head, is my favorite. “Clocks” is the most notable song off the album.  Coldplay put together another solid album, X & Y,  in 2005 with songs such as “Speed of Sound” and “Fix You.” Finally in 2008, Coldplay released Viva La Vida with songs such as, yes you guessed it, ”Viva La Viva” and “Lost!” There’s the history. Let’s talk top songs.

Quick note: Instead of saying under every song how great a voice Chris Martin has, I’ll just say it here. Chris Martin has a unique voice and it’s fantastic.

#11 The Scientist

“The Scientist” is a good song. It’s not fantastic but it is a good song. It’s off the Rush of Blood to the Head album. One of the things that’s great about Coldplay is its incorporation of the piano into some of its songs. “The Scientist” is one of those songs.

#10 God Put a Smile upon Your Face

The guitar and strong drum are excellent in this song. This is also off the Rush of Blood to the Head album.

#9 Warning Sign

“Warning Sign” is the third straight song off the Rush of Blood to the Head album. I want to use this in a movie some day but I doubt I’ll get that chance. I think it would be great for the aftermath of a dramatic death scene. Anyway, this song is very emotional. Despite it having no recognition, “Warning Sign” is worthy of a top 10 spot.

#8 In My Place

Hmmm…another song off the Rush of Blood to the Head album. “In My Place” is driven by the drums but would be nowhere without the guitar navigating in the passenger’s seat(That may be the dumbest play on words I’ve ever used). Anyway, “In My Place” yes, yes, good, good.

#7 Lost!

Finally, “Lost!” is off Coldplay’s latest album, Viva La Vida. In Viva La Vida, Coldplay incorporated a new style it didn’t use in its first three albums. Coldplay did a nice job with the album but I hope this is a one and done because its other style is better. “Lost!” is a great song. Once again the drums are the best part but the guitar in the middle is excellent. The remix with Jay-Z is also good but not as good as the original.

#6 Fix You

When talking about Coldplay, sometimes I forget about “Fix You.” I love songs that build and this song does just that. This is a solid song that kinda sucks until other instruments come into the song but that’s the idea. “Fix You” is perfectly split into two songs. It’s pretty cool. The song is about five minutes long and it takes off at the 2:34 mark. It’s also probably my favorite video. Of course it doesn’t have much competition. Not that Coldplay’s video are bad but there’s nothing to them. If the video gets removed, find it on YouTube and watch it(if you’re interested). “Fix You” is off X & Y.

#5 Yellow

“Yellow” is a fantastic song off the Parachutes album. The video is pretty stupid but that doesn’t change the song. I flip-flopped between this and “Speed of Sound” for the four spot but in the end I thought “Speed of Sound” was better than “Yellow” by the slightest of margins. The song is pretty simple but its so good. I don’t have to tell you that. Everyone knows “Yellow”(I think). You know why its good. The powerful drums and incredible sound from the guitar are simply awesome.

#4 Speed of Sound

“Speed of Sound” edges out “Yellow” for the number four spot and is off the X & Y album. “Speed of Sound” really brings you into another world. That’s what’s so great about it. You’re flying at the speed of sound yet you feel calm when you’re listening to the song. It’s excellent.

#3 Shiver

“Shiver” is a sleeper off the Parachutes album. I love the guitar in this and the drums are complex, which works really well for the song. I know I already said it up top but Chris Martin does a great job with the vocals on this one. The lyrics are straight and to the point. The great fakeout finish adds to that point(I love the fakeout finish).

#2 Viva la Vida

“Viva La Vida” is the number two song on my list and I’m not going to tell you what album its off because you probably figured that out already. The song is so simple. I could play the drums for this song. Anybody could play the drums for this song but it provided a great pace for the song. The best part of this song is the use of the violin, something that hadn’t been used for many if any Coldplay songs. And number one is…

#1 Clocks

For those of you who know me knew this was coming. “Clocks” is not only my favorite Coldplay song but its also my favorite song of all-time. The first time I heard this song was on HBO when it showed what movies would come to HBO next. The only movie I remember was Minority Report but the sound was and still is amazing. I love this song and I wouldn’t change it. Once again the piano is excellent. Chris Martin is great. The drums come up big at the end with the bashing of cymbals. The lone piano instrumental is fantastic and then its followed up by the big cymbal to get things started again. I absolutely love it. Time stops for me when I hear it. You could use the song for anything, which is why I loved it when SportsCenter used it for the moments of the decade. Awesome!!!!!

That’s my top 11. Agree, dispute, care less, enjoy.

See ya.
